Amedee Marchand Martella

Biography

Overview: Amedee has been interested in improving the teaching of STEM disciplines since she was an undergraduate student at CU Boulder. She worked with Drs. David Klahr and Marsha Lovett at Carnegie Mellon University for her master’s degree, Drs. Jeffrey Karpicke and Darryl Schneider at Purdue University for her PhD, and Dr. Richard Mayer at UC Santa Barbara for her postdoc. She was funded by the National Science Foundation at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels to explore STEM educational improvement.

Research: Amedee’s research focus is on applying the science of learning to STEM education. More specifically, her research is aimed at (a) evaluating the active learning construct; (b) determining the optimal amount and sequencing of active learning and lecture; (c) applying cognitive psychology principles to pedagogy; and (d) assessing the quality of the educational literature. Her studies take place in classroom and lab settings and also involve the use of educational technologies such as immersive virtual reality.
