Denise A. Spangler

Biography

Denise A. Spangler is in her 6th year serving as Dean of the Mary Frances Early College of Education at the University of Georgia. She is a former elementary school teacher, a member of the UGA Teaching Academy, and a recipient of the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Through her research she seeks to understand how novice teachers put into practice what they have learned from their teacher education programs, their experiences in schools, and their own experiences as students and how they balance these sometimes competing messages. In addition to her teaching and research, Spangler has been active in serving the university, the community, and her profession. Her national service includes chairing the editorial panels of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and Mathematics Teacher Educator and serving on the board of directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She also served as a member of the writing team for Mathematical Education of Teachers II (CBMS), Statistical Education of Teachers (ASA), Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education I and II (ASA/NCTM), and Assessment Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM). She was an elected member of the Clarke County School District Board of Education in Athens, GA for 12 years, serving 2 terms as vice president of the board. She currently serves of the board of directors for Family Connection-Communities in Schools of Athens and Horizons Atlanta.
