Books

Implementing a Critical Approach to Organization Development
The book also is the first organization development book written specifically for professionals that provides a “Critical Action Research Model” through a range of interventions and strategies. The text is the most recent title in the Professional Practices Series from Krieger Publishing Co. The series provides information and strategies on how to make practice more effective for professionals and those they serve. Books are written from a practical viewpoint and provide a forum for instructors, administrators, policymakers, counselors, trainers, instructional designers , and other related professionals. Bierema’s book provides an introduction to organization development theory and practice and addresses the inherent challenges in mitigating competing interests in the process. It argues that the world is in trouble, and prevailing organization practices are creating more debt, exploiting workers, disenfranchising marginalized groups, polluting the world, exploiting natural resources, perpetuating wars and deepening poverty. The book provides a framework and strategies for those committed to practicing responsible organization development that challenges the system, promotes equity and improves the status quo.

Human Resource Development: Critical Perspectives and Practice.
This textbook on HRD scholarship and practice is a significant departure from the standard HRD texts available. Based on Bierema and Callahan’s (2014) framework for critical human resource development, this book develops an understanding of HRD that addresses key, and contested, issues of practice associated with relating, learning, changing, and organizing for organizations. The chapters of this book cover the basic tenets of HRD, interrogate the dominant paradigms and practices of the field, teach readers how to critically assess HRD practices and outcomes, and provide critical alternatives to practice. This book addresses HRD as a contested practice—that is it is performed in contexts that are often incompatible—such as maximizing profits while retaining workers, motivating workers while downsizing the workforce, or privileging one group while marginalizing other less powerful groups in the organization. The overarching message of this textbook is that HRD is a contested space, and it is important for HRD professionals to reflect on their values, maintain their sanity, and retain their employment while attempting to do this difficult work that serves multiple stakeholders with competing agendas (such as management, workers, customers, communities, and so forth).
